Job Description

Job Summary:
We are seeking a skilled and professional Sign Language Interpreter to provide interpretation services for deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals in educational, medical, or professional settings. The successful candidate must have completed either the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) or the Illinois Deaf and Hard of Hearing Commission (IDHHC) screening/certification.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Interpret spoken English into American Sign Language (ASL) and vice versa in real-time.
  • Provide clear and accurate interpretation in a variety of settings, including classrooms, meetings, and public events.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional standards and the RID Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Collaborate with educators, support staff, and clients to ensure accessibility and inclusion.
  • Prepare for assignments by reviewing relevant materials or discussing terminology as needed.
  • Report any concerns regarding communication barriers to the appropriate personnel.

Required Qualifications:
  • Completion of EIPA with a minimum score of [insert minimum score if applicable, e.g., 3.5 or higher],
    OR
    Certification/screening through the Illinois Deaf and Hard of Hearing Commission (IDHHC).
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL).
  • High school diploma or GED; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Interpreting or related field preferred.
  • Strong ethical standards and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations and adapt to different interpreting environments.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • National Interpreter Certification (NIC) through RID.
  • Prior experience working in educational or public service settings.
  • Knowledge of educational terminology or specialized vocabulary, depending on the role.

Working Conditions:
  • May involve sitting or standing for extended periods.
  • Flexible scheduling may be required, including evenings or weekends depending on assignments.
  • Must be able to travel to various job locations if necessary.
